The Role of a Literacy Coach
The role of a literacy coach is likely different in each school jurisdication; but for us here in the NEA, there are some clear duties and responsibilities for our literacy coach. The following is a breakdown of what the duties and responsibilities are for the literacy coach as it relates to this role:
Data Analysis and Management

Data Analysis and Management
- Analyses class, grade level, and subject area data in schools
- Evaluates student achievement for the purpose of identifying students for placement in appropriate intervention and support services
- Promotes a school and district level professional learning community
- Implements school and district wide assessment systems
Coaching
- Mentors, observes, and coaches classroom teachers for the purpose of improving literacy instruction
- Assesses the needs of teachers for the purpose of determining PD and strategies needed to bring about student achievement gains
- Shares information with teachers relative to instructional practices
- Arranges mentoring sessions for teachers to view best practices in literacy
